Mountains

The Atlas Mountains, with high peaks, valleys and Berber villages.

Sommets et vallées de l’Atlas

High Atlas, Middle Atlas, Anti-Atlas, Siroua, Saghro…

Morocco’s unique geography makes it a land where “cold meets blazing sun”, as Hubert Lyautey once described. Shaped by the Atlas Mountains, which stretch for around 2,500 km across north-west Africa, the country is defined by remarkable landscape diversity. Acting as its backbone, the Atlas separates the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts from the vast Sahara Desert.

This mountain chain offers a striking variety of terrains, climates and ecosystems. It is home to authentic Berber villages set in deep valleys, alongside dramatic canyons and rugged ravines.

One of the highlights is Jbel Toubkal, which rises to 4,167 metres and overlooks the Toubkal National Park, drawing hikers from across the globe.

The Aït Bouguemez Valley, known as the “Happy Valley”, is celebrated for its tranquillity and green landscapes within the M’Goun massif.

Jbel Siroua, linking the High Atlas and Anti-Atlas, is an ancient volcanic region marked by distinctive rock formations, including dark lava flows and dykes.

Further south, Jbel Saghro and the Rose Valley reveal stark, mineral landscapes and breathtaking scenery, far from the main trekking routes.

This natural diversity makes Morocco an exceptional trekking destination, offering spectacular scenery, authentic experiences and unforgettable encounters along every trail.
